Abstract
The characteristics of Physical Education teachers have been the object of study in order to explore the concepts of “good teacher" and “effective teacher". The Physical Education teachers must be the foundation for students to develop their knowledge and hability so that they become physically active people (Association for Sport and Physical Education [NASPE], 2004). The objective of this study is to assess the influence of teachers’ characteristics in the promotion of active and healthy lifestyles onto their students once they finish school. 26 individuals were randomly interviewed, ages 18 to 30, having all of them finished school. The transcription and content analysis were then carried out. Intra and inter observor fidelity was analised through the Bellack formula. 38,46% of the interviewees had had a positive influence by their teachers in the practice of active and healthy lifestyles after finishing school and 61,54% revealed that their Physical Education teachers had no influence in their active and healthy lifestyles. The motivation/incentive, the teacher student-student relationship and the demands towards students were the characteristics referred by intervewees.
